Bilingual book spotlights legendary Guangxi mountain singer
Guangxi Normal University Press launched the Chinese-English bilingual book "Liu Sanjie: Her Free and Undying Mountain Songs" at the 28th Beijing International Book Fair.
Regarded as the goddess of mountain songs by the Zhuang ethnic people in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, Liu Sanjie has been the embodiment of singing talent, dignity and the pursuit of social justice and freedom.
Liu Sanjie's story has become widely known across the country since the end of the 1950s, thanks to collections and adaptations of original folklore and the creation of subsequent theatrical, film and fictional works as well as poetry about her. As such, the singer occupies an important part of the intangible cultural heritage of Guangxi.
Huang Shaozheng, the author of the book, selected the scripts and songs sung by Liu Sanjie from existing literary works, films and TV dramas, and translated them into English for the first time. The book aims to provide a translation that can be both read as a literary work and be performed by English readers, and a foundation for sharing the songs and legends about Liu Sanjie with a global audience.
