Massive flooding hits Chongqing

On Monday, the Cuntan hydrologic station in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River saw the biggest flooding this year, as the Jialing River's No 2 flood and the Yangtze River's No 1 flood had formed in the Qujiang River. Qujiang is a tributary of the Jialing River.
Following the heavy rainfall, major floods occurred in Minjiang, Tuojiang and Jialing rivers, three Yangtze tributaries. The flood in Qujiang exceeded the warning level, forming the Jialing River's No 2 flood at 8 am on Monday. Yangtze is the longest river in China.
The Yangtze River No 1 flood was formed in the upper reaches at 2 pm on the same day, due to the increase of upstream and interval water inflow. The rapidly growing water inflow in the Three Gorges Reservoir reached 54,000 cubic meters per second, which was unprecedented being the first flood to exceed the magnitude of 50,000 cubic meters per second this year.
According to the Upper Reaches Bureau of the Changjiang Water Resources Commission, as of 5 pm on Monday, the water flow at the Cuntan hydrologic station was 46,800 cubic meters per second and the water level exceeded the alarming level of 0.05 meter. The water level is still rising.
As of 7 pm on Monday, the water flow at the Luoduxi hydrologic station in Qujiang was 19,100 cubic meters per second. The water level exceeded the alarm level of 0.09 meter and is still rising.
Relevant departments, sub bureaus and stations of the Upper Reaches Bureau of the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are doing hydrological forecasting and paying close attention to multiple circumstances to better address the two overlapping floods.
