A Beijing-based charity has offered funding for 620 villages ravaged by the recent flooding in Central China's Henan province to roll out cleanup campaigns and restore normalcy.

The China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, which started the silt-cleanup program on July 26, said the beneficiary villages were spread across 17 counties in the province.

The program first planned to select 100 hard-hit villages for funding, with no more than 100,000 yuan ($15,473) for each village. The money is intended to compensate the cleanup crews, which are usually formed by migrant workers stranded at home by continuous downpours.

However, more than 4,500 villages applied by July 27, prompting the foundation to expand coverage to 520 more villages.

Multiple enterprises have made donations worth 60 million yuan, it said.
