A Chinese mainland spokeswoman on Wednesday stressed "Taiwan independence" is going against the flow of history and leads to a dead end.

The White House's China coordinator Kurt Campbell on Tuesday said the US supports a strong unofficial relationship with Taiwan and doesn't support "Taiwan independence".

Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said "the two sides of the Straits must and will be reunified."

Zhu urged the US government to take concrete action to abide by the one-China principle and relevant provisions of the three China-US joint communiques.

"The US should explicitly oppose 'Taiwan independence' and play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits," she said.
