At least three pilot whales, a State Level II protective species, died after a group of 12 whales were stranded in the shallow water of a shoal in Linhai county in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on Tuesday morning.
Local authorities mobilized more than 100 rescuers and fishermen, who dug deep holes and installed sunshades for these whales, several of which were ill.
Marine experts said the whales may have been stranded when chasing fish in the area.
