Guangzhou, Guangdong province, had no new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the local health commission reported.

It was the first zero increase of locally transmitted cases on a single day in the latest coronavirus outbreak, which began on May 21, when the city reported its first confirmed case.

"We need to do our best to fight against the pandemic, as there will be still risks of sporadic cases," said Chen Bin, deputy director of the commission, during a press briefing on Wednesday.

Additionally, six more areas in the city's Yuexiu, Panyu and Haizhu districts, which had been closed earlier over virus concerns, began lifting their lockdowns on Wednesday, Chen said.

"We must be completely aware that having no new cases does not mean there is zero risk. The lifting of lockdowns does not mean relaxation of our efforts in prevention and control of the spread," she said.

As of Tuesday, a total of nine COVID-19 patients had been discharged from the hospital, Chen said.
