Deaths and injuries caused by series of elephant attacks

A number of attacks involving wild elephants have been reported in Yunnan province in recent years.

In August, a 48-year-old villager in Lancang county died after being attacked by an elephant in a sugarcane field.

On the night of Aug 19, 2019, a man was found dead on a road in Mengman township, Menghai county. Traces of wild elephant activities were found by the roadside.

A woman, surnamed Ye, was injured by a wild elephant when she took a trip to Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve with her family in May, 2019. The attack happened as she was taking her child to urinate in a forest near the roadside.

Early on April 29, 2019, a man in Menghai county, identified only as Cai, died after being attacked by an elephant herd. The victim discovered several wild elephants approaching his house and tried to chase them away. Also that morning, a man surnamed Kuang was found dead in a rubber plantation in Mengla county. Investigations found that he died after being attacked by an elephant.

On April 25, 2019, a geological worker, surnamed Ming, died in an elephant attack while riding his motorcycle in Dadugang town.

In July, 2019, a wild elephant was caught in Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous prefecture by workers from a local forestry and grassland administration, along with police officers. The adult male animal had stopped vehicles on a road from passing, entered villages to find food, and roamed downtown areas, where it caused damage.

A 45-year-old on his way to monitor wild elephants in Lancang county was killed by a herd of the animals in February 2018.

In June, 2017, a man from Jinghong city hit an elephant as he was driving a small truck to Kunming, capital of Yunnan, to sell bananas. His wife was injured in the incident, which also caused a tire to burst and broke a window in the vehicle.
