Assistant Foreign Minister Wu Jianghao summoned Japanese ambassador to China Hideo Tarumi on Thursday in Beijing, protesting Tokyo's decision to discharge radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and urging Japan to retract the decision.

He requested the establishment of an international joint technical working group that includes China to monitor and oversee the wastewater's disposal, saying discharges should not be initiated without agreement with stakeholders and international organizations.

Also, China will work with the international community to monitor the situation's development and reserve its right to make further responses, he added.
