Authorities in Damshung county in the Tibet autonomous region announced this week that the Khukchung Gangri Glacier Scenery Site will open to the public on Thursday.

Khukchung Gangri, also known as the No 1 Glacier of the Lhasa Valley, is the nearest glacier to the regional capital, Lhasa. It first opened to the public in 2019.

Tsering Lhashung, a manager at the Damshung County Changthang Culture and Tourism Development Co, said it takes less than three hours to drive a car from Lhasa to the site entrance, about 5,500 meters above the sea level.

"It is about 10 kilometers between the entrance gate and the foot of the glacier, which takes less than 20 minutes by car on a dirt road," Tsering Lhashung said.
