Loess Plateau land treated to stop erosion
Shanxi, a province on the Loess Plateau, has treated more than 18,000 square kilometers of land to battle water and soil erosion over the past five years, authorities said on Tuesday. The province plans to treat another 3,666 sq km of land this year, the provincial water resources administration said. Tens of millions of metric tons of mud and sand washed into the Yellow River every year, making up most of the silt that gave the river its name. Thanks to water and soil conservation efforts, the amount of sand running into the Yellow River from the province has dropped from some 400 million tons a year in the early 1950s to less than 20 million tons.
