President Xi Jinping has extended sympathy to his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador over his testing positive for COVID-19.

In a message, Xi wished Lopez Obrador a speedy recovery. Since the pandemic broke out, China and Mexico have helped and supported each other in the fight against the virus, Xi said.

He voiced the staunch support of the Chinese government and people for the Mexican government and people in their battle against the pandemic.

Under the leadership of Lopez Obrador and the Mexican government, Xi said he believes that Mexico will achieve a final victory over the pandemic at an early date.

Lopez Obrador announced he tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday after returning to the capital on a commercial flight from an event in central Mexico. A senior health official said on Wednesday that the president was progressing well with minimal symptoms.

In another message, President Xi has extended sympathy to Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi over his infection with COVID-19 and wished him a speedy recovery.

On behalf of the Chinese government and people, Xi expressed staunch support for the Surinamese government and people in their efforts against the coronavirus.

In an address to the nation on Sunday, Santokhi said he was feeling strong and had no symptoms of the virus, but would remain at home on the advice of health authorities. He is in isolation at his private residence where he will be working for the next few days, he said.
