The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council has condemned the US sanctions on six Chinese officials over the arrest of 53 people on suspicion of subversion under the National Security Law for Hong Kong.

China strongly opposes the actions which blatantly interfere in China's internal affairs, a spokesperson of the office said in a statement issued on Monday.

Those arrested, including Benny Tai Yiu-ting, an associate law professor dismissed from Hong Kong University, had ignored the law and openly and illegally organized the so-called primaries which sought to hijack public opinion under the pretext of a "referendum", the spokesperson said.

Their act, aimed at subverting the Hong Kong government, posed a grave threat to the constitutional order of the city, seriously disrupted the region's electoral system and may have violated the National Security Law for Hong Kong, the spokesperson said.

Police in Hong Kong carrying out the arrests and investigations were acting in defense of the rule of law, the statement added.

US anti-China politicians, such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are accustomed to meddling in Hong Kong affairs and recklessly interfering in China's internal affairs, the spokesperson pointed out.

They have recently thrown out so-called sanctions again and again, which only reveals their sinister intentions of using the Hong Kong issue and sparing no effort in trying to contain China's development, the spokesperson said.

The so-called sanctions are merely desperate political tricks and will not shake the firm determination of the central government and the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and security and development interests as well as the long-term prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, the spokesperson added.

Since the promulgation of the national security law, illegal activities such as violence and "Hong Kong independence" moves have been effectively curbed, helping rapidly restore Hong Kong's social order and protect the public's rights and freedoms, the statement said.

The spokesperson added that Hong Kong's progress from chaos to order is unstoppable and the likes of Pompeo are nothing but ridiculous "mantis" (small insects) trying to stop the wheels of history from rolling forward, and he is indulging in "doomsday madness" before stepping from office.
