China opposes island's economic talks with Washington

China urged the United States on Wednesday to stop strengthening relations with Taiwan after Washington announced that economic talks will be held with the island next week.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin expressed opposition to official exchanges between the US and Taiwan, saying any attempts to solicit foreign support or undermine cross-Straits relations are doomed to fail.

Reports have quoted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo as saying that Taiwan economic officials and US Undersecretary of State Keith Krach will hold a dialogue in Washington on Nov 20. The talks will include discussions about securing supply chains and 5G security.

Wang urged Washington to abide by the one-China policy and the three Sino-US joint communiques and stop all forms of official exchanges and contacts with Taiwan.

The US should handle Taiwan-related issues carefully and properly and refrain from sending wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces to avoid damaging Sino-US relations and cross-Straits peace and stability, he said.
