6 dead, 34 injured in road accident in India

MUMBAI - Six people died and another 34 were injured when a private bus fell into a gorge at Nandurbar, 398 km North of Mumbai on Wednesday.

The injured have been admitted to the hospital after they were rescued from the accident site, the local police official said.

The accident took place at 3:15 am local time when the driver of the ill-fated bus that was travelling to Surat in the western state of Gujarat from Malkapur in the western state of Maharashtra, lost control over the wheels and fell 30 feet into the gorge.

Rescue operations with the help of 50 personnel and equipment's like cranes and gas cutters were on, but the police have expressed fear that the death toll may rise.

India accounts for about 500,000 road accidents annually, one of the highest in the world, in which about 150,000 people die and another 300,000 are handicapped, according to government data.
