The international session of the 2020 Annual Conference of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, one of the most influential water groups with nearly 90 years of history in China, came to a close on October 20. Affected by COVID-19, this year's CHES international session has been held online. Opportunities always come with challenges. The online meeting has managed to connect experts, scholars, young professionals and thousands of audience members across the world.

The international session was divided into two parts: The Third Academic Paper Contest for Young Professionals in Water Sector in the morning and academic reports in the afternoon. Nearly 20 contestants from two groups of full-time students and young professionals were recommended by different universities or research institutions to compete in the final. Experts and professors from China, America, Malaysia, New Zealand and Brazil, with decades of years of research or work in the water sector formed the judging committee. The contestants share their views or ideas while the judges ask questions about the contestants' presentations and give professional advice to encourage contestants to go further in their research. In addition to serving as a competition, the contest is also a great bridge linking young professionals with experts keen to provide instruction. The contest came to an end with Sun Yiqun, a full-time student from Hohai University, and Yang Yuan, a young professional from China Three Gorges Corporation, winning first prizes. Other winners included second prize winners Ouyang Jiayi, a full-time student at Wuhan University, Yang Jingjing a full-time student at Tsinghua University and Zhuang Chao, a young professional from Hohai University, and third prize winner Yang Weijia, a young professional from Wuhan University.
