President renews state of emergency in capital
Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov renewed a state of emergency in the capital on Monday after a week of unrest since a contested election. His office said Almazbek Orozaliyev, who was appointed to take charge of security in Bishkek during the state of emergency, had asked for the emergency measures to be extended beyond Oct 21 to further stabilize the capital. Protests broke out in the former Soviet republic of 6.5 million after the Oct 4 parliamentary election.

Polar mission returns from 'dying Arctic'
Researchers on the world's biggest mission to the North Pole arrived on Monday in the port of Bremerhaven, bringing home devastating proof of a dying Arctic Ocean and warnings of ice-free summers in decades. The Polarstern ship had spent 389 days drifting through the Arctic trapped in ice, allowing scientists to gather vital information on the effects of global warming. The team of hundreds of scientists saw for themselves the dramatic effects of global warming on ice in the region, considered "the epicenter of climate change", mission leader Markus Rex said. "We witnessed how the Arctic Ocean is dying," Rex said.

Mumbai slammed by widespread grid failure
A grid failure caused a widespread power outage in India's financial capital Mumbai and surrounding areas on Monday, authorities said, a rare occurrence that disrupted train services in the city of 20 million. India's two main stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange and the BSE, as well Mumbai's international airport, said they were operating normally.
