LANZHOU -- Chinese political advisors held a meeting on Wednesday to pool wisdom on consolidating achievements in poverty alleviation for the 14th Five-Year Plan period from 2021 to 2025.

Wang Yang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, presided over the meeting held in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Gansu Province, and delivered a speech.

Based on ensuring a timely and high-quality victory in the battle against poverty, more should be done to formulate a policy framework and working mechanism for consolidating the achievements made in poverty alleviation to create conditions for promoting the overall revitalization of villages, and gradually narrowing the gap between urban and rural development, Wang said.

Political advisors at the meeting fully recognized the achievements in poverty alleviation and the historic changes that have taken place in rural areas in the western region. But they also said some places are still vulnerable to poverty, so western regions that have been lifted out of poverty must continue to consolidate their achievements in poverty alleviation during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

They highlighted opportunities brought by a new development pattern known as dual circulation, which takes the domestic market as the mainstay while letting domestic and foreign markets boost each other.

They also suggested efforts to strengthen the infrastructure construction in the western region, cultivate industries with distinctive advantages, support the development of leading enterprises, and encourage private enterprises to participate in poverty alleviation.
