Every two days in China, a new museum opens, and more than 1.2 billion people visited museums around the country last year, cultural authorities said on Monday in Beijing.

Liu Yuzhu, director of the Department of Culture and Tourism in East China's Jiangsu province said at the opening ceremony of International Museum Day that the country had 5,535 registered museums and held 28,600 exhibitions last year.

"Now there's one museum for every 250,000 people in China," he said. "During China's fight against the coronavirus, the museums presented more than 2,000 online exhibitions and were visited by more than 5 billion people."

Because of coronavirus control measures, Liu spoke via webcam connected to the main event for International Museum Day, which was held in Jiangsu's Nanjing.

Gong Liang, curator of the Nanjing Museum, which hosted the main event, said the museum has received valuable material donated by Jiangsu Province Hospital showing China's collective efforts against the pandemic.

"The materials, including protective clothing signed by medics assisting Hubei and the uniforms of the national emergency rescue team, tell moving stories about the Chinese people's efforts against the pandemic and pay tribute to all who have sacrificed greatly to save others."

He said that the exhibition at the museum to mark the day — jointly launched by eight cultural institutions across the country — demonstrates a selection of some 200 cultural relics dating from the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) to the Han Dynasty (206 BC to AD220).

"The exhibition presents to the audience the uniqueness and significance of Chinese civilization," he said. "I hope the exhibition will bring inspiration and reflection on how to promote diversity in today's world and contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind. "
