Mainland reports 8 new COVID-19 cases; all but 2 imported

The Chinese mainland reported eight new infections of the novel coronavirus on Friday, bringing the total number of infections to 82,941, the National Health Commission released on Saturday.

Of the new infections, six were detected from inbound arrivals, with five located in Shanghai and the other one in Hainan province.

The other two infections were locally transmitted cases in Jilin province.

According to the commission, 10 people were discharged from hospitals after recovery. In addition, 745 were discharged from medical observation on the same day.

To date, the death toll on Chinese mainland stood at 4,633. No new deaths were reported on Friday.

In the past 24 hours, the commission reported two new suspected cases -- both were detected from inbound arrivals in Shanghai.

A total of 739,278 close contacts had been traced as of Friday midnight.

Meanwhile, another 5,053 close contacts are still under medical observation.

As of Saturday, the Chinese mainland reported 13 new asymptomatic cases, along with 70 discharged from medical observation.

So far, a total of 561 asymptomatic patients infected with the virus are still under medical observation, with 30 detected from inbound arrivals, said the commission.

By Saturday, there were 1,537 confirmed cases including four deaths in Hong Kong, 45 confirmed cases in Macao, and 440 in Taiwan including seven deaths.
