Many cities cancelling or shortening May Day holiday for students

Many domestic cities announced they would cancel or shorten the length of the upcoming five-day May Day holiday starting on Friday for students who have just returned to campus due to the impact of COVİD-19.

The Education Bureau of Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, announced on April 21 that it was cancelling primary and secondary school students' 2020 spring break, which was scheduled to be from Thursday to May 6, considering the extended winter vacation, as well as ensuring the length of teaching for this semester.

In a Q&A post released on April 18, the Education Bureau of Huizhou, South China's Guangdong province, said third-grade students at junior and senior high schools will not have a holiday during the May Day holiday after returning to campus on Monday to ensure that total class hours of the semester are not reduced and to avoid the risk of cross-infection on the way back to school from home.

A number of cities in East China's Anhui province have issued notices to adjust the school holidays for May Day and reduce the number of vacation days for different grades.

Some cities, including Zhengzhou and Nanyang of Central China's Henan province, require students and teachers not to leave the city during the upcoming holiday.

Anyang city also requires all teachers and students who go to some key areas, like Hubei, Beijing, and Shanghai, to get permission to take the leave and be quarantined for 14 days before returning to work and school.
