Baofeng Energy Group in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region has revamped some of its production lines to make a type of polypropylene, a raw material for masks.

The raw material is made from coal, of which the region boasts a wealth of reserves. A ton of this type of polypropylene can make 900,000 to 1 million surgical masks, or 200,000 to 250,000 N95 masks.

With a daily output of 1,000 tons, the first batch of polypropylene rolled off the line on Feb 14. A total of 1,080 tons of polypropylene has since been transported to mask-making companies in South China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, East China's Zhejiang and Southwest China's Sichuan provinces, to ease the shortage of mask materials.
