Updated: 2020-02-26 Print

A recently cured novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) patient donated his plasma at Guizhou Blood Center in Southwest China on Feb 24, becoming the first person to do so in Guizhou. The plasma will be used in the treatment of critically ill patients after detection, virus inactivation, and preparation.

The patient was treated at the Jiangjunshan section of the Guiyang public health center from Jan 28 and discharged on Feb 5. When informed that his plasma can be the cure for other patients, he decided to donate without hesitation.

According to the latest version of the diagnosis and treatment plan for COVID-19 patients issued by the National Health Commission, adopting the plasma of cured cases can effectively improve the cure rate and reduce the death rate, which brings hope for patients in severe condition.

Currently, Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University, and the Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University are in charge of recruiting, evaluating, and transporting the cured COVID-19 patients, as well as collecting plasma samples.

The plasma will be tested and prepared as 100 or 200 milliliter virus inactivated plasma products. When transferred to the Guizhou Blood Center by cold chain transport, the plasma products will be stored or arranged to designated hospitals.
