People from the grassroots level across China are doing what they can to contribute to the country’s efforts in fighting against the novel coronavirus epidemic. Yao Shulan from Lutou village, Daliuhang town of Penglai, East China’s Shandong province, is one of them.

“At this special time, I want to do something to help,” said Yao Shulan, who donated 1,000 yuan last week to the village committee.

The 81-year-old brought up five children on her own after her husband, who served in the army, passed away on duty in 1975.

“I couldn’t make it without help from our village committee and my neighbors, so when our village is in need, I want to contribute,” she said.

This is not the first time Yao donated money to her village. In 2002, she donated 500 yuan to the village committee, which was collecting social funds to repair roads at the village.

“Her (Yao’s) behavior encourages us who are working at the front line of fighting against the novel coronavirus. Although she is not a Party member, she has set an example for us,” said Liu Jie, the secretary of the Party branch of Lutou village.
