The Hubei government has taken a range of steps to protect and reward medical workers who are battling the novel coronavirus outbreak on the frontline, vice-governor of Hubei Yang Yunyan said on Saturday.

"Medical institutions are required to stock up sufficient protective equipment, and urge their health workers to step up protections against possible infections at workplaces," he said at a news conference.

"Designated funds have been allocated to secure accommodation and daily necessities of frontline workers participating in diagnosing or treating infected patients," he added.

Doctors and nurses will be allowed enough respite and have access to paid leave and health checkups after completing their assignments.

Measures have also been taken to provide doctors and nurses with psychological services and help them take care of their offspring or older family members.

A variety of subsidies and compensations has been implemented, including a daily subsidy varying from 200 to 300 yuan ($29 to $43), and insurance programs covering work-related injuries, he said.

"Medical workers have played a significant role in controlling the disease spread and rescuing infected patients. They are selfless and brave," Yang said.
