Ultra HD lab opens in Shanghai

The first national key laboratory of ultra-high definition video and audio was launched at the Shanghai International Media Port on Dec 6.

Built by China Media Group in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Academy of Broadcasting Planning of National Radio and Television Administration, the laboratory is focused on end-to-end advanced video and audio technology — especially UHD video and audio, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence technology.

It will carry out basic research, application demonstration and application practice in three research directions, including key technologies of UHD video and audio production and broadcasting systems, video and audio media communication technology and key technologies of video and audio service security.

"Relying on Shanghai's scientific and technological innovation, software and hardware environment, as well as first-class educational and scientific research resources, the laboratory will make full use of the achievements of the media, communication and information technology revolution to build a leading research and application demonstration base for video and audio media integration technology," said Shen Haixiong, the head of China Media Group.

A scientific research experience exhibition center will be also set up in the laboratory to carry out avant-garde drama, cultural forum, children's performing arts, film and television recording under UHD conditions with high-standard small theater and multi-functional exhibition halls for the public.

In addition, the laboratory will work with Shanghai Jiaotong University to cultivate a group of high-level young academic leaders and technical talents for the industry, and build an international first-class innovative talent training platform.
