SEOUL - The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) fired two unidentified projectiles into the East Sea, Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the Republic of Korea said Thursday.

The JCS said in a statement that the projectiles were launched from the DPRK's eastern province of South Hamgyong towards the eastern waters around 4:59 pm local time.

It noted that the ROK military was closely monitoring relevant situations and maintaining defense posture in preparation for possible additional launches.

The JCS was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying the projectiles, presumed to have been fired from a super-large multiple rocket launcher, traveled about 380 km at a maximum altitude of some 97 km.

The ROK military noted that the projectiles were launched within a 30-second interval.

It urged the DPRK to immediately stop such acts that escalate military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The DPRK's test-firing came about a month after Pyongyang launched two projectiles into the eastern waters on Oct 31. Pyongyang test-launched projectiles a total of 13 times this year.
