BEIJING - China plans to push forward the "toilet revolution" in its primary and secondary schools nationwide, according to a circular.

With toilets in rural schools in China's central and western regions as the focus, the campaign aims to provide safe, clean and environment-friendly facilities in the next two years.

Jointly released by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Education, the circular also demands to specify pragmatic solutions for each school and ensure the implementation of the project.

China launched the "toilet revolution" in 2015 to increase the number and sanitation of toilets at tourist sites. The campaign expanded to improve public toilets in cities and build better private toilets in rural areas.
