At least two people were killed and another 12 injured in a traffic accident during rush hour in Shanghai on Thursday, according to the police department of the city's Putuo district, where the accident took place.

The driver who caused the accident, a 63-year-old Shanghai native surnamed Chen, is currently receiving emergency treatment at a local hospital. An investigation into the accident is underway, said the district police, who did not rule out the possibility of drink driving.

Video clips shared on social media show a white car failing to stop at an intersection on Daduhe Road before crashing into several cars, motorbikes and pedestrians. Traffic at the area has been temporarily affected.
