Meng Jianwei, former deputy director of the Public Security Department in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, has been charged with bribery, possessing huge amounts of money with unknown origins and illegally carrying firearms and ammunition, by the people's procuratorate of Hulun Buir, according to Supreme People's Procuratorate on Thursday.

The Hulun Buir Intermediate People's Court will hear the case at a later date.

According to the indictment, Meng took advantage of his position to gain benefits for other individuals or enterprises, then accepted huge bribes from them either paid in cash or other assets.

Between 2003 and 2017, he mainly served as director of the public security department in Baotou city in Inner Mongolia, security chief in Baotou, deputy director of the region's public security bureau and a political adviser in the regional political consultative conference. He retired in 2017.

Prosecutors said he asked officials to benefit other individuals on project management, then accepted huge bribes. His properties obviously exceeded his legal earnings and he couldn't clearly explain the legal sources of his properties.

Prosecutors also said he illegally carried guns and ammunition.

According to the Communist Party of China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, Meng was placed under investigation in October for "serious violations of Party disciplines and laws".

According to the CCDI, he resisted the Party inspections, didn't truthfully report his personal matters and made decisions on major matters himself without public discussion.

According to the National Commission of Supervision, he made use of his power and allowed his wife to arrange jobs for their relatives. He became a "protective umbrella" for mafia-like gangs and interfered with individual cases.

He was expelled from the Party in May.
