British Commons Speaker Bercow to resign

LONDON - John Bercow will stand down as speaker of the British House of Commons on Oct 31 at the latest, he announced on Monday.

Bercow said, if the Commons votes for an early general election, his tenure as speaker and as an MP will end when this Parliament ends; if MPs do not vote for an election, he will stand down on Oct 31.

Bercow has been an MP for 22 years, and speaker of the House of Commons for 10 years.
