HANGZHOU - Police in East China's Zhejiang province have arrested 36 suspects for organizing online gambling involving about 542 million yuan ($75.8 million), local authorities said Thursday.

In December 2018, police in the city of Jiaxing received a tip-off that a local resident surnamed Zhou was promoting an online gambling platform on the social network app WeChat.

The police captured Zhou in January this year and found she was an agent of the platform, which was set up by a gang led by a suspect surnamed Wu.

The large platform had accumulated around 810,000 members and hired 150,000 agents since it was launched in September 2018.

On May 15, the police launched raids in Chongqing Municipality and the cities of Shenzhen and Chengdu, busting Wu and his gang.

Further investigation into the case is underway.
