BEIJING -- Chinese lawmakers held panel discussions on Saturday morning to deliberate a report on the implementation of the national economic and social development plan, a report on the implementation of this year's budget and a report on the reform and development of preschool education.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, attended the panel discussions of the committee's bimonthly session, which runs from Thursday to Monday.

The panel discussions were also participated in by members of the NPC Standing Committee and NPC special committees, as well as some NPC deputies.

The national economic and social development plan for 2019 has been well implemented, with main economic indicators kept within an appropriate range and major tasks and projects progressing smoothly, laying a solid foundation for reaching this year's target, according to a statement issued after the panel discussions.

Applauding the implementation of this year's budget, lawmakers suggested more efforts be made to pursue a proactive fiscal policy, strengthen performance-based budget management, deepen the reform of the fiscal and tax systems and forestall and defuse local government debt risks, according to the statement.

Lawmakers also called for more preschool education resources, better teaching staff and management systems, as well as accelerated legislation on preschool education.
