A band in Huaibei, Anhui province, who named itself after typhoon Lekima, sparked outrage among netizens on Monday as their name of choice was considered as a "great disrespect" to those who had died or risked their lives to rescue people in the typhoon.

About 14 million people across nine provinces were affected by typhoon Lekima and at least 56 people died, according to the Ministry of Emergency Management.

The new band was announced on Monday by Hutaoli, a music restaurant and bar in Huaibei, but immediately triggered questioning from netizens.

The bar's Sina Weibo account said later on Monday that band members were severely affected by Lekima on their way to Huaibei, so the name was special to them all.

"People can't say we don't respect victims just because we use this name, " the post said.

But in a later reply, the bar said that they were not thoughtful, expressing sorrow and saying they would change the band's name.

The Paper reported on Thursday that the band's performance has not been affected; but posts about the band name on its Sina Weibo account have all been deleted.

An officer from Anhui provincial meteorological service center was quoted saying that the names of typhoons are released into the public and can be used by them, but choosing the name of a typhoon that has caused heavy loss is somehow against morality.

The band is not the first one to name itself after a typhoon. In 2016, a band in Xiamen, Fujian province, named itself Meranti after the typhoon ripped through the city.
