SHANGHAI -- A majority of young singles in Shanghai regard 30 years old as the prime age for marriage, according to a new survey report.

Some 22.52 percent of total respondents hope to get married at 30 years old, and 21.5 percent of them want to get married at 28, according to the report based on more than 4,900 questionnaires from the Shanghai Committee of China Communist Youth League.

"Needing someone's company" and "having reached the proper age" are the main motivations for marriage. About 75.5 percent of them said they want to be accompanied by someone and 41.41 percent are willing to tie the knot when reaching a certain age.

Peer pressure is also a major reason for marriage, as roughly 24 percent of the young singles said they feel such pressure. More than 60 percent of them have been urged to get married by their parents.

More than half are still hesitant about forming a family. Among the respondents, 9.21 percent confirm their unwillingness to marry, while 50.31 percent do not want to marry for the time being.

Among the respondents, males are more eager to get married than females, the report showed.

In terms of the criteria for a potential spouse, 21.76 percent of them regard personality as the primary factor ahead of income, age and family background.
