In its modern history, China has had a great deal of success mastering human potential to mitigate the worst ravages of nature. Few better examples exist than the taming of the Tengger Desert.

The Baolan Raiway, which connects Baotou in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Lanzhou in Gansu province, gained its fame for being China's first railway that went through desert.

The 990-kilometer-long railway was constructed in the 1950s and went through the Tengger Desert for 140 kilometers.
