Boris Johnson has officially become the United Kingdom's new prime minister after formally being invited by Queen Elizabeth II to form a government.

Johnson met the queen in Buckingham Palace in a tradition known as "kissing hands" a few minutes after Theresa May visited the monarch to formally tender her resignation.

The Oxford-educated ex-journalist and former mayor of London will now attend to the task of assembling a new Cabinet around him, a process that could take several days.
