Dozens sickened in Beijing community, authorities advise water facility cleanup
Beijing's Chaoyang district government announced on Wednesday night that the authorities have investigated the water quality in the Dougezhuang area where a number of residents reported experiencing acute gastro-enteritis and discovered it was caused by multifactorial comprehensive contamination. The investigation group composed of experts on epidemic diseases, water quality and the environment released their results, saying water quality in the area has reached national drinking water standards.
"The reason for the acute gastro-enteritis of those residents was largely caused by combined comprehensive effects," said the result.
The group did an epidemiological investigation and water sample examination.
Meanwhile, the group learned that health hazards, including irregular management of the water tank and water system, exist in the residential communities and suggested authorities clean those water facilities as soon as possible.
On Friday, the district authority received public reports that many residents had diarrhea. By Sunday night, 49 residents had gone to the hospital and 105 residents reported symptoms but didn't go to the hospital.
The investigation group collected 105 stool specimens and examined 79 of them. According to the report, 52 samples contained norovirus, which is highly contagious and commonly spread through food or water that is contaminated during preparation or via contaminated surfaces.
