A man who attacked a local taxi driver in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan province, has been detained on the charge of intentional assault, according to local police.

Marko, a 30-year-old man from Serbia, was detained on Monday after the taxi driver, surname Yang, was declared to have suffered minor injuries by judicial experts, the local public security bureau stated on its official Weibo account on Tuesday.

In the early morning of July 8, Marko assaulted Yang following a dispute near Baicao Road in Chengdu's Pidu district. Local police attended to the incident and carried out a thorough investigation, according to the bureau's post.

Reports from local media claim the taxi driver said Marko refused to pay his 61-yuan($8.9) cab fee shown on the taxi meter and got out of the car. When Yang tried to stop him from leaving, Marko punched Yang's face twice.

Yang called the police, and Marko hid in a hotel and fled from the backdoor.

Yang's face was still swollen after three days and suffered multiple fractures.

Pidu public security bureau said on their official Weibo account that foreigners in China should obey China's laws, or they will face penalties and shoulder compensations for their illegal activities.
