66 tonnes of smuggled waste seized in Northeast China
DALIAN - About 66 tonnes of smuggled solid waste were seized by customs officers of the coastal city of Dalian in Northeast China's Liaoning province, amid the country's move against the import of "foreign garbage".
The solid waste, including slag and ash that contain zinc, will cause serious air pollution and damage the soil ecosystem if they infiltrated into the underground water, according to the customs office of Dayaowan, under Dalian customs office.
The waste have been handed over to relevant departments for further processing.
In 2018, Chinese customs dealt with 481 trash smuggling cases, with 1.55 million tonnes of smuggled solid waste seized.
Some companies have illegally brought foreign waste into the country for profit, posing a threat to the environment and public health.
