SYDNEY - China has partnered with the tropical South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to set up a new surgical center in the capital city of Port Moresby.

Quoting PNG China medical team leader Wei Yang He, the Post Courier Newspaper reported on Friday that China has donated medicines and an array of state-of-the-art medical equipment to the Port Moresby General Hospital (POMGH).

"We have the necessary equipment to build a first-class minimally invasive surgery center," he said.

"To a certain extent, it will start a new era of minimal invasive surgery at the POMGH."

"We believe we will be able to establish the best minimally invasive surgery centre in the South Pacific after 3-5 years, and provide first-class medical services for the local people in Papua New Guinea and the people of South Pacific."

Among the new equipment POMGH staff and their patients will now have access to are a fiber ureterorenoscope, pneumatic lithotripters and instruments for Bipolar Plasmakinetic transurethral resection of the prostate.

With these devices, Wei said the hospital will be much more effective in treating and diagnosing patients.

"At the same time, we have also established a scientific management and maintenance system together with the medical staff of POMGH," Wei said.
