France Albert Rene, the former president of Seychelles, died on Wednesday. He was 83.

Rene, who led the island nation for more than a quarter century during one-party rule, died at the Seychelles Hospital on Wednesday morning, according to Seychelles News Agency.

Rene, who ruled from 1977 until his retirement in 2004, took power following a coup d'état that ousted James Mancham.

During his tenure, he created various social institutions, medical services, housing developments and ensured access to free education and healthcare.

In his message of condolence, Danny Faure, the Seychelles' president, said Rene was a true patriot with a profound love for his country and people.

Former president James Michel offered his deepest condolences to Rene's family and prayed that they be granted the courage to surmount their great loss, Seychelles News Agency reported.

"A foremost son of Seychelles is no longer with us. An era has passed. I join his family and the people of Seychelles in grieving the death of president France Albert Rene. His demise leaves a great void amongst us," said Michel.

Michel said regardless of how people felt about Rene, his achievements far outweighed his shortcomings.
