Building green data centers is an important task for building a new generation of information infrastructure, and a basic requirement for ensuring the sustainability of resources and the environment.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, National Government Offices Administration and National Energy Administration have jointly issued a guidance to strengthen the green operation of data centers.

The document clarifies that it is necessary to guide data centers to establish a green operation and maintenance management system, and clarify the development goals of energy conservation, water conservation, and comprehensive utilization of resources. Corresponding work plans and assessment methods should be based on indicators such as energy efficiency values, and include real-time analysis and intelligent regulation of the centers' consumption of resources.

It is necessary to promote the energy conservation and green transformation projects in the data center in an orderly manner, especially in the old data centers with low energy resource utilization efficiency. The power efficiency of existing large and very large data centers should be improved through green construction and procurement, and the elimination of high-energy-consuming equipment.

According to the document, it is expected that by 2020 data centers' average energy consumption will reach the advanced international level for power utilization efficiency.
