US special envoy meets with top S. Korean national security advisor

SEOUL— Stephen Biegun, US special representative for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) policy, met Monday with Chung Eui-yong, top national security advisor for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, according to the South Korean presidential Blue House.

Chung and Biegun met for about 50 minutes from 4 pm local time (0700 GMT) at the presidential complex.

Biegun explained to Chung about the US position ahead of the working-level discussion between Pyongyang and Washington, while Chung delivered his country's assessment on current situations and issues to tackle to the visiting US special envoy.

During the meeting, Chung said South Korea anticipated a fruitful working-level discussion between the DPRK and the United States leading to a successful DPRK-US summit.

According to Yonhap news agency, Biegun came here to hold a working-level discussion with his DPRK counterpart on Tuesday at the inter-Korean border village of Panmunjom for the second DPRK-US summit.

Top DPRK leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump held their first-ever summit meeting in Singapore in June last year.

Biegun arrived in Seoul Sunday and met with Lee Do-hoon, special South Korean representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs.
