Japanese troops in October 1937 massacred more than 1,500 villagers in the Meihua township of Shijiazhuang, roughly 60 percent of the township's population at the time, and burned down over 600 houses, according to the Meihua Massacre Memorial Hall in Gaocheng, a county-level city administrated by Shijiazhuang.

"The documents represent rare evidence left by the Japanese that show details of their brutal slaughter at the township," said Zhang Tongle, a history professor at Hebei Normal University.
