10 confirmed dead, 40 rescued in boat accident in central Uganda

KAMPALA -- Ten people have been confirmed dead and more than 40 others rescued in a Saturday boat accident on Lake Victoria in the central Ugandan district of Mukono, police said.

Police said in a tweet the marine force was continuing with the rescue mission.

Luke Owoyesigire, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the accident had occurred but could not give more details.

"The marine is handling and a report will come out. I won't speculate this night," he said.

Boat accidents on Ugandan lakes are common due to overloading.
