The Mid-Autumn Festival, one of China’s traditional festivals, was celebrated for the first time at the New York City Hall on Sept 25.

Acting Consul General of Chinese Consulate General in New York Zhao Yumin, executive member of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development Li Baochun, New City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and community leaders attended the celebration, also known as the full moon festival.

Li said he was very proud to see more Americans are interested in learning about the Chinese culture and traditions. He invited everyone to experience the charm of the ancient imperial capital.

“The cultural significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival, such as family reunions and harvest celebrations, are memorable each year,” he said.

The celebration featured Beijing-style performances, insights into how the holiday is celebrated in Beijing as well as introduction of Beijing cuisine. Chinese Pianist Lang Lang shared his experience living in Beijing and New York and his thoughts on Chinese and American family values.

Beijing has been a sister city of New York City since 1980. This year marks the 38th anniversary of the establishment of sisterhood.
