Roads to and on the grasslands 1997 [Photo by Bruce Connolly/chinadaily.com.cn]

Leading off the main highway to Baotou, a road heads up a long valley initially well farmed while encompassing several villages. Gradually the land becomes drier, settlements fewer, trees disappeared as the grasslands are reached. Flocks of sheep grazed alongside groups of circular tents, or yurts, which were mainly there for tourists. Few people in that area were still following nomadic practices. Most lived in brick homes usually within villages although yurts regularly stood alongside the newer permanent dwellings.
