The Edinburgh Festival Fringe kicked off its "Shanghai season" on Aug 24 and the innovative designs of Shanghai-style qipao dresses stunned the audience in the British city.

A result of the collaboration with Donghua University and the University of Edinburgh, the Shanghai season features contemporary and futuristic designs of qipao made using high-tech materials.

Designers utilized environmental-friendly, energy-saving and luminescent materials to make high-tech qipao. Sensors were implanted in the fabrics, enabling medical data to be stored and transmitted to a database. Users could also construct their own personal profile on a mobile phone app to track their health data.
