Domestic comedy 'The Island' continues to lead Chinese box office


Domestic comedy The Island continued to lead the Chinese box office in the week ending Aug 19, earning about 540 million yuan ($78.9 million), China Film News reported Tuesday.
The film has taken in more than 1.07 billion yuan at the box office since hitting Chinese screens on Aug 10.
Second place went to the American-Chinese co-production The Meg, earning 427 million yuan last week. It has generated 775 million yuan since its release on Aug. 10.

Another domestic comedy Europe Raiders came in third, raking in 130 million yuan since hitting Chinese screens on Aug 17.
Chinese fantasy film Go Brother took fourth place, grossing 157 million yuan last week.
Rounding out the top five was Sony Pictures Animation's animated comedy Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, with earnings of 108 million yuan since hitting Chinese screens on Aug 17.
