o commemorate Independence Day on Aug. 17, footwear brand Wakai has released a batch of special edition sneakers, called Uknity. Kompas.com reported that the sneakers bear an Indonesian flag-themed design.

The name Uknity comes from “unity” to depict the country and “knit” from how the shoes are created. The red-and-white sneakers take the silhouette of Wakai’s latest collection, Get Your Own Unit (GYOU), created to give maximum comfort with rubber and nylon as the main materials.

"This collection is a gift to Indonesia on Independence Day," said Alice Dwiyani, Metroxgroup’s division manager of creative development and marketing, at the launching event in Jakarta on Monday.

The GYOU collection was first launched in February in limited numbers. Within two months, the nylon-knitted shoes were sold out. 

Local brand Wakai was founded in 2012, known for their Japan-inspired slip-on canvas shoes. Since then, it has produced flat shoes, boots, bags as well as clothing and has expanded to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines. (saz/wng)
